La Rioja: Wine, History and Landscapes to Fall in Love With
La Rioja is a land of endless vineyards, charming villages and history around every corner. Small in size, but immense in culture and gastronomy, this region is a paradise for lovers of good wine and nature.
Logroño, its capital, combines modernity and tradition. Laurel Street is a temple of tapas, where you can enjoy delicacies such as grilled mushrooms or patatas bravas. The Co-cathedral of Santa María and the Stone Bridge over the Ebro are symbols of the city.
But the soul of La Rioja is in its vineyards. Haro, the cradle of wine, is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in Spain. The Battle of Wine, every June 29th, turns locals and visitors alike red in a unique festival. In villages such as Briones or San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the landscape of hills and vineyards offers unforgettable views.
History is also in the air in this land. Santo Domingo de la Calzada, right on the Camino de Santiago, preserves its cathedral and its legend of the rooster and the hen. San Millán de la Cogolla, with its monasteries of Suso and Yuso, is the cradle of the Spanish language and an essential World Heritage Site.
Riojan gastronomy is powerful and delicious. Riojan-style potatoes, with chorizo and paprika, are comforting on cold days. Riojan-style cod and stuffed piquillo peppers are delicacies best enjoyed with a good Rioja, considered one of the best wines in the world.
The festivals and traditions keep the spirit of La Rioja alive. San Mateo in Logroño celebrates the grape harvest with joy; in Haro, the running of the bulls and the patron saint festivities are quite a spectacle.
La Rioja is history, wine and captivating landscapes. A corner of Spain where every sip and every corner tells a story.
