Facts about Castilla y León

Castilla y León

Castilla y León: History, Heritage and Monumental Nature

Castilla y León is a land of imposing castles, medieval cities and infinite landscapes. Its history can be felt in every corner, from the traces of the Roman past to the Gothic cathedrals that dominate its cities.

Valladolid, its capital, is sober and elegant; it was the residence of kings and today it preserves a historic center with Renaissance churches and monumental squares. Salamanca, with its 13th-century university, its Plaza Mayor and its double cathedral, is a benchmark for art and knowledge. Burgos dazzles with its Gothic cathedral, while León fascinates with its stained glass windows and its lively Barrio Húmedo.

But Castilla y León is much more. In Ávila, its medieval walls create one of the most impressive postcard scenes in Spain. Segovia surprises with its Roman aqueduct and its fairytale Alcázar. In Zamora, the Romanesque churches and the Duero River draw a landscape of stillness. Soria and Palencia hold lesser-known but equally valuable architectural gems.

The natural environment here is spectacular. The Sierra de Gredos mountains offer hiking routes through mountains and glacial lakes. The Río Lobos canyon, with its cliffs and caves, is a paradise for hikers. And Las Médulas, ancient Roman gold mines, form an almost unreal reddish landscape.

The gastronomy of Castilla y León is robust and authentic. Roast suckling lamb from Aranda, black pudding from Burgos and garlic soups reflect its traditional essence. The wines of Ribera del Duero and Toro elevate any meal to another level.

The festivities keep its traditions alive. Holy Week in Valladolid and Zamora is breathtaking; in small villages, fairs and pilgrimages continue to fill the squares.

Castilla y León is a land of history and authenticity. Its cities and landscapes tell of centuries of greatness, inviting you to discover its essence in every corner.
