Facts about Asturias

Asturias: Pure Nature, Intense Flavors and Living Tradition
Asturias is a natural paradise; a land where green floods everything, the mountains kiss the sky and the Cantabrian Sea crashes against its rugged cliffs. Here, tradition remains intact, cider flows in every tavern and the hospitality of its people turns every visit into an unforgettable experience.
Oviedo, the capital, is an elegant and stately city. Its clean and well-kept pedestrian streets lead to the imposing Cathedral of San Salvador, a key point on the Primitive Route of the Camino de Santiago. To stroll through the old town is to go back in time; the pre-Romanesque churches of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, located in the nearby hills, are witnesses to a glorious medieval past.
On the other hand, Gijón, with its maritime air and vibrant character, shows another side of Asturias. Its port, its urban beaches and the Cimavilla neighborhood reflect the essence of a city that looks to the sea. And in Avilés, the architecture is reinvented in the Niemeyer Center, contrasting with the medieval charm of its old town.
But if anything defines Asturias, it is its spectacular nature. The Picos de Europa National Park, with its imposing mountains and deep gorges, is a paradise for hiking and adventure lovers. The Cares Gorge, winding its way between cliffs, is one of the most impressive hikes in Spain. And the Lakes of Covadonga, surrounded by pastures and mountains, look like something out of a fairy tale.
On the coast, the landscapes are equally fascinating. Dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches and fishing villages such as Cudillero, Lastres and Luarca invite you to lose yourself in them without haste. Llanes, with its colorful houses and fine sandy beaches, is one of the most attractive destinations on the Asturian coast.
And then there is the gastronomy; hearty, comforting, authentic. Asturian fabada, with its mixture of beans, chorizo and black pudding, is the most emblematic dish, but not the only one. Cachopo, huge and crispy, has become an icon of Asturian cuisine. And to drink, cider is poured with art in any corner of the region; it is more than a drink, it is part of the Asturian identity.
The festivals and traditions here are lived with intensity. Covadonga, with its sanctuary perched on the mountain, is the spiritual heart of Asturias. The Descent of the Sella, in August, combines sport, music and fun on the banks of the river. And in every village, pilgrimages and folk festivals keep the essence of the region alive.
Asturias is a destination that conquers with its beauty, its flavor and its authenticity. Those who arrive feel they have found a refuge; those who leave dream of returning.
